My Journey Through Objects

My fascination with objects began long before I started collecting them. Each one, from tools to artifacts, holds a story, a piece of history that transcends & connects cultures and time. This blog is an ode to these objects that adorn the walls of my studio, each one a testament to the creativity, innovation, and survival instincts of humanity.
The Universal Language of Tools
Everything in our lives revolves around tools. From the moment early humans picked up stones for hunting, tools have been integral to our survival and evolution. This journey from primitive tools to a sophisticated iPhone illustrates how tools have shaped our existence. The diversity in tools across cultures, yet their underlying commonality, is what captivates me. Whether it’s a simple scythe used in a field or an everyday kitchen utensil, each tool reflects a unique cultural quirk and ingenuity. There is a cultural tapestry woven into the objects I collect, each piece telling a story of its origin, use, and the people who crafted it.
The Charm of Everyday Objects
Objects, for me, are more than just a function; they are storytellers. A simple object like a collection of carabiners, for instance, is not merely about their functionality in climbing or military operations but about the varied designs and purposes they serve. The same goes for simple objects like scissors or bells, which, through their design and use, reveal much about the people and cultures they come from. Each object, whether handcrafted or industrially produced, holds a charm and a narrative that adds to its beauty.
Imagined Histories and Real Inspirations
Sometimes, the true stories of these objects are unknown, and I find myself creating my own tales around them. It’s not always about their artistic appeal but the ethos they carry. Often crafted out of necessity these become sources of inspiration. They represent a variety of techniques and materials, from wire and casting to natural found objects, each with its own unique value.
The Art of Collecting
My collection is a mix of objects from junk markets, curio shops, and craft bazaars, as well as contemporary industrial products. Each object, whether a simple agricultural tool or an elaborate piece of enamel work from Burma, has a story to tell. They reflect the diverse walks of life and the rich tapestry of human creativity. They are my books, each one contributing to the larger narrative of my life and work.
Collecting objects for me is incidental and accidental and a passion that profoundly enriches my life and work. Objects hold a unique story that deepens my understanding and fuels my creativity. Their tales, rich with history and culture, offer endless opportunities to learn, feel, and absorb new perspectives. Every object I encounter adds another layer to my journey, expanding my horizons and inspiring me. This continuous exploration keeps me connected to the world in a meaningful way. There is always more to discover, more to appreciate, and more to integrate into my work. My journey with these fascinating objects is ever-evolving, and I can’t wait to discover where it will take me next.
